Shapeshifting: Transformations in Native American Art HC

Shapeshifting: Transformations In Native American Art celebrates Native American ideas continuously refreshed across time and space. Featuring sculpture, paintings, ceramics, textiles, photographs, videos, and installations from U.S., Canadian, and European collections, this book pairs rarely seen historic pieces with contemporary works spanning 200 B.C.E. to present. It challenges misconceptions by treating objects as art rather than artifacts, highlighting Native American artists' multivalent creativity and inventive contemporaneity. Over seventy-five works organize into four thematic groups: changing, knowing, locating, and voicing—offering a paradigm shift in understanding Native American art.

The publication accompanies the exhibition Shapeshifting: Transformations in Native American Art on view at the Peabody Essex Museum from January 14 through April 29, 2012.
